Protection of the Bulk Electric System (BES) is a key component and obligation of Utilities operating in United States today who are connected to the BES. Marked as a Critical Infrastructure in the Energy Sector, the BES is part of three segments - the other two being Oil and Gas. Utilities continuously engage in Infrastructure and Application efforts to meet, if not exceed their Compliance obligations in support of maintaining the reliability and security of the BES operations. Assets are categorized into a Low, Medium or High Impact asset, which are consequently subject to a set of Compliance requirements set by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
